In pneumatic systems, the solenoid valve control circuit symbol is a schematic diagram used to describe its function, usually consisting of a box, arrows, "T" and English characters

The diagram of the solenoid valve shows the connection and control logic of the solenoid valve within the system. The solenoid valve symbol in the pneumatic circuit diagram follows ISO 1219 and ANSI standards.

1. Position VS Port‌

"Number of positions": Refers to how many working positions the valve spool of the solenoid valve has. The boxes in the graphic symbol represent the working positions of the valve, and the number of boxes represents the number of positions.

"Number of ports": Refers to the number of non-interconnected ports on the valve body. It is determined by observing the number of points in the square that intersect with the arrow line and the T line. The two ends of the arrow line represent two ports, T represents one port, and the number of points is the "number of ports".

2. Solenoid Valve Symbol

①“” indicates the position of the valve spool, which is usually two or three boxes. The number of boxes indicates the number of “positions”. The box near the coil represents the state of the valve spool when the coil is energized, and the box near the spring represents the state of the valve core when the coil is de-energized and the spring is reset.

② “→” indicates that the two ports are connected, but the direction of the arrow does not necessarily indicate the actual direction of the airflow (the specific direction is subject to the actual situation).

③ “┻” or “┳” indicates that the port is closed.

④ The number of interfaces connected to the outside of the box indicates the number of “ports”.

⑤ The pattern on the left represents the solenoid coil.

⑥ The pattern on the right represents a spring.

⑦ The English characters represent the ports on the valve body, which are the inlet port, working port, and exhaust port. They are divided into three-way, four-way and five-way.

- Inlet port (P): Connect to the air treatment units.

- Working port (A and B): Connect to the pneumatic actuator or device.

- Exhaust port (R and S): Connect to the silencer.

*The status of the ports under each box is different, which means that the connection method of the ports at different positions of the valve spool has changed.

3. Type of Solenoid Valve Symbol

4. Types of Solenoid Valve

① Based on Operation Method

Direct-acting solenoid valve: Directly use electromagnetic force to push the solenoid valve spool to achieve the on-off of the air path. Work under low pressure and small flow. Fast response time.

Pneumatic pilot solenoid valve: Under the action of electromagnetic force, the pilot valve is opened first to allow air to enter the valve spool air chamber, and the air pressure is used to push the solenoid valve spool to achieve the connection and disconnection between the air circuits. Suitable for high-flow and high-pressure applications.

② Based on Flow Configuration

Valve type Ports/positions Function Application
2/2-Way Solenoid Valve 2 ports - 2 positions Basic type. Usually used to control the on and off of a certain fluid. Suitable for applications such as air supply shutoff and fluid control.
3/2-Way Solenoid Valve 3 ports - 2 positions Used to control single-acting pneumatic cylinders or pneumatic pilot valves. Commonly used in the start and stop operations of pneumatic circuits.
4/2-Way Solenoid Valve 4 ports - 2 positions Controls the direction of air flow in double-acting pneumatic cylinders. Used in automation systems requiring bidirectional control.
5/2-Way Solenoid Valve 5 ports - 2 positions Provides directional control for double-acting actuators. Commonly used in industrial robots and automated machinery.
5/3-Way Solenoid Valve 5 ports - 3 positions Allows intermediate stopping positions for precise control. Types of center positions:  center closed, center exhaust, center pressure. For use in advanced pneumatic systems requiring precise airflow management.
